A local business leader hailed the launch of a new tool that allows people crossing the border from Canada into Vermont to learn about delays at the Highgate Springs and Derby Line checkpoints.
“For businesses this could be a real home run,” Ruth Wallman said. She is the vice president of tourism for Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection released the Border Wait Time app earlier in December. The app, which can be downloaded for free, provides information about wait times, the number of open lanes and whether the pre-screened NEXUS lane is available.
Wallman said that she hears complaints about the wait at the border particularly during the summer from people who are Quebec residents and own property in northern Vermont.
She noted that this app could improve the border experience for visitors from the north and be a game changer for U.S. business owners considering expansion.
Although Wallman only learned of the app on Monday morning, she was excited to share it with others and to use it herself.
“I’m going to download it right now,” she said.
